Easy Indoor Snowball Painting -Winter Craft for Kids

Looking for a snow activity that will keep your kids indoors? This Easy Indoor Snowball Painting is the perfect winter art project for little hands. Let your kids make piles of snow or paint a snowball toss on a bright blue paper. All you need are some clothespins, pom pom balls, glue gun, paper plates, blue paper, and paint. Snowball painting is perfect for any winter themed activities and great for fine motor practice.

Snow activities can get cold so bring your kids inside for some Ultimate White Hot Chocolate and some snow painting fun. Your preschool kids will love this easy Snowball Painting art. You can even add glitter for a cute & fun wintertime snow activity.

This craft has always been a huge hit for my daycare kids because we don’t get a lot of real snow here in Texas. Winter activities like Indoor Snowball Fights with paper snowballs or a snowball kit are also great for those gross motor skills and gets some of the silly wiggles out of your kids.

What you will need to Snowball Paint with Kids

How to Snowball Paint with Kids

Gather your supplies and lets get started on this fun winter art project. First, you need to cover the table you will be using with newspaper or a washable tablecloth. Next, we will be attaching the pom pom paintbrush we are using to the clothes pin. After this step its just setting up the table and getting ready for your kids to have some fantastic fun snowball painting.

We will be using wooden clothes pins and pom-poms of different sizes. Add a little hot glue to the pinch part of the clothes pin and quickly set the pom pom on top. The hot glue will keep the pom pom in place while painting your snowballs. By gluing the pom pom it will help keep the mess to a minimum and will help practice those  fine motor skills. In a pinch I have used cotton balls in the past and they do not hold up llike pom pom balls for longer use. If you have several children using these snowball painters then be sure to use pom poms instead because they don’t absorb paint like cotton balls do.

Keep in mind if you choose not to add hot glue then it will still work you just might have to chase your pom pom snowball around the paper if it falls off. Leftover pom pom balls can be used for a winter sensory play or use tongs to pick them up for an extra fine motor activities that kids will love.

A run away pom pom would also work great for a snowball craft if you have it in a box and as the pom pom rolls it can paint the paper. Lightly bounce the box to make the snowball paint dots onto the paper. No matter how you attach the snowballs to the clothes pins there is always a fun art project that can come from snowball painting.

Make a variety of sizes for the pom pom painters. Some kids might like to paint with a smaller snowball while others would like to make a giant snowman with a large pom pom snowball painter. I like to give each child a choice of 3 sizes, 2 will work but 3 seems to do better especially if you are using these snowballs again for another child. Each size can be used for

Decide how many paper plates you will need, either one per child or if you have a few sharing. Each plate should have a little white paint and if you choose a blue paint as well. The two shades of paint brought some depth to their snowball painting masterpiece. Feel free to use a muffin tin or paint pallet if you don’t want to use a paper plate. Water is not needed in this project because you just keep using the pom pom until your finished or its the next person’s turn.

Set out a few sheets of paper to for the kids to decorate all of them or to choose from if they are working on one sheet for now. We decided to use different shades of blue. It was a great way to really make the white snowball painting to pop. You can also cut out a white landscape to go on the bottom of the blue page so the end result will look more like a scene scape picture.

Actual snow flakes are different shapes and sizes which is exactly what this snowball painting should look like. Each dip in the paint the pom pom will have more paint and every dab afterwards will have a little less and less as the snowball moves across the page.

Another winter ideas is to take time to teach your kids about snow and snowflakes by reading a book aloud while they make their easy indoor snowballs craft or spending the week working on more winter themes. Add a little bit more paint as needed while the kids paint their perfect snow day on paper.

Some kids love to draw giant white circles on their winter pictures, while others just dot snowballs on the page. So weather your child has covered the whole page or added just one dot it still needs to dry. Once the kids are finished painting be sure to leave the paper where it can dry and lay flat. Display the artwork on your fridge, art frame, or handing on an art display. I made my own art display with two cup hooks, a string, and tiny clothes pins, it turned out to be such a cute idea.
